The people behind Zuidberg: Johannes de Vries

“My passion for welding began at home in the garage, where I used to restore old cars. When the opportunity arose in 2014 to start a work-and-learn program at Zuidberg, I seized it with both hands. I trained as a construction worker and also took a programming course. I soon discovered that side of the job was even more interesting to me.

“THE MORE WE AUTOMATE, THE BETTER I CAN PROGRAM.”

Since 2018, I have been programming welding robots. It can sometimes be quite a puzzle, especially when we need to join many different components together. I think about the correct sequence and investigate which jigs are needed to hold the components in place during welding. In addition, there are various safety requirements and quality standards to consider.

In this work, I regularly consult with colleagues from my own team and other departments. Together, we look at how to produce a component as efficiently and effectively as possible. Recently, for example, we invested in a dual-torch system. This allows the welding robot to have a larger working range, making an additional manual weld less often necessary.”

“Being able to contribute ideas to these kinds of smart technologies — and even new welding robots — is something I really enjoy. The more we automate, the better I can program. ‘First time right’ — that’s our shared goal.”
